Life Insurance as an Investment

A second purpose of life insurance is to use it as part of your investment portfolio. Most financial advisors recommend it to balance personal investments so that if one investment falls—for example, the stock market—another, perhaps bonds or real estate, is likely to rise.

By balancing your portfolio and diversifying your investments, you can weather storms in one area by holding assets in other areas that rise or remain stable.

Some life insurance policies are actually long-term investments to which you can contribute and from which you can withdraw funds before you die. These so-called cash value policies, including whole life and universal life insurance, are essentially savings accounts that accumulate cash value over time while also paying for your protection. Although these policies do not offer the highest interest rates you can find, the earnings are tax-free, so you receive a higher return than simply depositing your money into a savings account on
which you must pay taxes.
