Financial Literacy: A Necessity

Various studies have consistently pointed to a troubling reality in the United States: a significant segment of the population, particularly young adults, has insufficient financial literacy. Survey data reveal that a considerable proportion of participants receive what are considered "failing" scores, answering fewer than 60 percent of the questions correctly.

Experience in financial advising and education, along with observation of the current landscape, confirms substantial gaps in personal finance knowledge across broad segments of society. Although access to financial information has increased compared with earlier times, the financial environment has become notably more complex, presenting more options and, consequently, greater potential risks.

A fundamental cause of this situation is the widespread lack of formal instruction in personal finance. Many people do not acquire the skills needed to manage their money because they are not taught at home and because secondary and higher education systems offer few relevant courses.

Although some people are fortunate enough to learn key financial principles from family, knowledgeable friends, or specialized books, others never gain this essential knowledge or acquire it through negative experiences and costly mistakes. A lack of financial literacy correlates with a greater tendency to make financial mistakes, resulting in substantial financial losses. In addition, a lack of control over personal finances has a considerable emotional impact, leading to increased stress and anxiety.
